How to Fight Hyperpigmentation

Here’s the deal: As women, we try to love our bodies. We really do! We were born with them, so we might as well love them, right?

Buuuuut it would be kind of nice for us to have Instagram-worthy bodies for a day, too!

But the reality is this: Our bodies do things. They’re always doing things. Like acne. Or ingrown hairs.

Or dark blotches on our chests, shoulders and/or faces.

Wait…these spots are darker than our usual skin tones, standing out like a sore thumb. What gives? Why do we have these dark spots on our skin?

Well, first off, don’t panic. These spots are very common and usually harmless. In fact, you may have something known as hyperpigmentation.

What Is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation (also known as sun spots and uneven skin pigmentation) is a phenomenon where extra melanin creates dark spots or discoloration on your skin, contrasting against your normal skin tone. This makes the skin look uneven and blotchy.

The Dermatology and Laser Center of Chapel Hill adds that, even though anyone of any skin tone can get hyperpigmentation, melanin in darker skin tones uses more pigmentation to maintain the skin’s dark appearance. This can lead to the melanin adding a little too much extra seasoning to your skin. As a result, dark spots are more common in people with darker skin.

What Causes It?

Since everyone has different skin types, there are multiple reasons why hyperpigmentation occurs, and some people either get more dark spots than others or simply don’t get them at all. But when uneven skin does happen, some possible causes include hormonal changes, excessive sun exposure and reactions to certain medications.

There are several different types of hyperpigmentation, but one of the most well-known types is melasma, which is more common in women due to possible hormonal changes (birth control and pregnancy being some of these hormone-changing examples).
